We left camp this morning at about 730 and reached the Botswana border by 9am. After two quick, polite, and efficient visits to border offices (on the Namibia and Botswana sides), we were on our way into Botswana by 930. We stopped for a quick lunch and for fuel, then decided to drive after dark to reach Kanye (near the South African border). We encountered just two potholes in 800 km, very little traffic and few people. After a little delay trying to find the lodge, we set up camp and re-heated last night’s leftover chili for dinner. It was getting very cold, so we dug our extra sleeping bags out of the storage box on the roof and brought them into the tent with us.

In the morning we wandered around Hammerstein and saw the animals they had. A mad zebra who took a liking to Slade and rusks and was nicknamed Squealer because that’s what he did, another purring cheetah and a young leopard who seemed alternatively happy and unhappy. Then we hit the road to blast down to Aus. Vicky and Slade were hoping to get some horse riding in, but the place they were going to, Klein Aus Vista, no longer offered that service. We decided to camp there anyway, because their campsite was so pleasant. It was set in rock cliffs with few people and hot showers. We drove down the road to a waterhole to see if we could find some of the Garub wild horses. We did see several and one came up to the waterhole to drink. Back at Klien Aus we stopped in the bar for drinks before heading back to the campsite for food and sleep.

We spent the day in Luderitz and surroundings. We toured the diamond ghost town of Kolmanskop. Unlike such places in the US where you are not allowed into the buildings, in Kolmanskop you are allowed to go inside the houses, some of which have been mostly reclaimed by the desert sand. There is glass and detritus everywhere, but it is very interesting. Slade was selected to bowl in the ancient bowling alley after claiming to be the South African bowling champion. At least he hit the pins! We then went back to Klein Aus Vista for another night, and discovered that David and Nadine had been there two days before and we had just missed them.

We were very grateful for our sleeping bags last night. We must not be accustomed to cold weather because we both expected to open the tent to find frost on the car. It hadn’t gotten quite that cold, but it must’ve been close! After a hot shower for Witt and breakfast, we got on the road for Johannesburg. We passed through the South African border (again it was quick and efficient) at about 11am. By early afternoon we were near Pretoria, and experienced a culture shock with sightings of a McDonald’s restaurant (our first in at least 4 months since Morocco), shopping malls, free ways, and traffic jams. We arrived at Slade’s sister’s house at about 5pm. After packing for our flight to Kilimanjaro, Vanessa and Gordon, along with a few other family members, treated us to a wonderful braai. We showed them some of our photos on our laptop and discussed our trip. We went to bed at about 11pm.
